This iPhone application is a useful to use when traveling, but don’t expect it to be 100 percent accurate all the time. Roads may change and stores may go into and out of business quickly and it’s possible that AroundMe may not be up to date. This is a good app to reference in an unfamiliar place, but it’s good to use other sources as well.

Although AroundMe works well with the GPS capable iPhone, iPod Touch users are not as lucky. Without a built in GPS system, the application is unable to accurately pinpoint your position, but it still works with the device nonetheless. AroundMe combines several searches into just one application.

One thing we really enjoy about the Kayak iPhone app is the nifty little charts and graphs it displays. You can see whether prices are trending up or down and make a decision to buy now or wait if you think a better deal is around the corner. There’s also other useful information like contact numbers for hotels and airlines as well as the number of layovers, destination airports, and a calendar view of your current or planed itineraries. You can also help improve the Kayak iPhone app by leaving feedback right from your device to the developers.

The Kayak iPhone app is one of the best tools for travelers to find the best places to backpack and we highly recommend it. Keep in mind that it doesn’t cost you anything to try it out!

iTranslate acts as your own personal and customizable pocket translation dictionary for your iPhone and iPod Touch. This iPhone app is completely free and lets you translate in over 30 languages. Switching between different languages is fast and easy. Another nice feature about this app is that is saves your recent texts in case you need to go back to them or can’t for the life of you remember how to translate goat in Chinese.

The iTranslate iPhone app works with most of the major languages on the planet and does a decent job converting common words and phrases although the grammar needs work. Similar to other online translation engines iTranslate isn’t perfect but gets the job done and will be enough to find a bathroom in case SitOrSqaut doesn’t have anything nearby.

The translation engine of the app is based on Google so you can expect the quality of the conversions you get to be similar to any online translations you may try. Again, it’s not a complete replacement for actually learning a few sentences of a language, but a useful tool to getting the basic phrases, “where’s the bathroom”, “how far is”, and hello.

Aside saving your translations, you can also email them to yourself or your friends who might care or be stuck trying to figure out how much a drink costs. iTranslate also comes with a few other tweaks like giving you the option of changing font sizes and spell check.
